Sweet 16
Where I share some of the things I've been thinking about, learning about, and exploring across work, tech, wellness, and life.
Hi friends,
Life is good. Summer is hot. Nature is still the GOAT. Some recent photos from the trails at Rockefeller State Park and Deer Valley.
Here are some of the things I’ve been getting into and exploring since my last update:
Patrick Debois, one of the original founders of the DevOps movement, gave this talk on the intersection of DevOps and Generative AI. 30 minutes of fast flying examples covering a very wide range. The lesson of the talk? Experiment and learn.
Interesting podcast all about Vertical Market Software. Coming from the world of Enterprise SaaS, I find insights about VMS particularly fascinating, especially since I’ve gotten a front row seat recently as I’ve been working with a few SMBs in my consulting work. Some distinctions between VMS and Enterprise: a.) SMB customers do not re-evaluate software on a regular basis and switching costs are very high, leading to very high retention rates, b.) customers like the highly targeted features, strong product market fit, c.) less competition in the market and therefore less innovation. While there’s still greenfield opportunity, to win in VMS you need a little Enterprise Software, Consumer, and FinTech in your DNA, as well as enough time in category.
Bidiretional EV charging “…could also be useful to supplement our solar panels at night. Imagine our solar panels filling up our EV batteries during the day when it is sunny out and our EVs powering our home at night when it is not.”
Live bird video stream in case you need a little bit of delight in your day. H/T Jerry
A link that takes you to a random Web 1.0 website every time you click it in case you need a little bit of curiosity in your day. H/T pierrick
An overview on Stablecoins. Learn about the 3 types (fiat backed, crypto backed, algo backed - not all equally stable) and how they can make money programmable, permissionless, borderless, and interoperable.
As I’m gearing up to spend a few weeks traveling in Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, I was excited to read
’s declaration that Tokyo is the new Paris.I’ve been slowly getting through The (Delicate) Art of Bureaucracy (slowly because I’m also reading several other books at the same time. I know, I know, not very lean of me) and highlighted this lovely paragraph that I think so succinctly explains the benefits of Devops and cloud. Including it here in the hopes it will help me remember. Bottom line is it reduces *business risk* because:
infrastructure ($$$$) can be replaced at any moment and can be scaled up or down as a company’s needs change.
it allows you to try out new ideas inexpensively and quickly, without a committment.
small, incremental changes (which can only be accomplished via devops as the cost of deployment goes to near zero) make it easy for a company to pivot to market and customer needs.
A note to my subscribers:
I started this substack eight months ago as an experiment to see if developing a writing a habit would help clarify my thinking and/or provide any other benefits. You can read about my original intentions in my first post here. This is my 16th update, so Happy Sweet 16 to us!
I plan to continue to write about twice a month and will be sharing musings, meditations, and links to things I’m finding interesting as I build out my consulting company, raise my kids, and have fun creating and learning in the worlds of crypto, tech, science and wellness.
Thank you for supporting my writing and journey. If you’d like to get in touch you can reply to me here, or find me on twitter and farcaster.
Until next time, keep putting good into the world. —adrienne🌏❤️
